On Friday March 12, Common Pleas Court Judge Otho Eyster sentenced three men and three women for various crimes and violations of community control supervision, according to Knox County Prosecutor John Thatcher.
Justin E. Brown, 24, Mount Vernon, was convicted of breaking and entering for breaking into a Coshocton Road store, on August 1 and 15 and again on November 9, 2009. He was also convicted of safecracking for stealing money from the store’s safe. Brown was sentenced to a three year term of community control supervision. The terms of his supervision include a 90 day jail sentence and a six month commitment to the Licking-Muskingum Community Corrections Center for participation in drug and alcohol programming. Brown’s 17 month sentence will remain suspended, if he complies with the term of supervision for the next three years.
Brown’s co-defendant Brittney N. Taylor, 22, Mount Vernon, was convicted of complicity in the commission of breaking and entering for helping Brown during the break-ins. She was also convicted of corrupting a minor with drugs for using heroin while breastfeeding her newborn baby, in November. Taylor received the same sentence as Brown with two exceptions. Taylor will serve her six month commitment at the River City Community Corrections Center, in Hamilton County. She will go to prison for two years for any failure to comply with her supervision terms. Brown and Taylor were also ordered to pay almost $3,000.00 in restitution to the store. Detective Craig Feeney, Mount Vernon Police Department, investigated both cases.
Cindy M. Clements, 22, Mount Vernon, was convicted of four counts of possessing stolen checks and two counts of forgery. On August 14, 2009, Patrolman Jeremiah Armstrong, MVPD, was called to a bank where Clements attempted to cash a stolen check with a forged signature. Detective Sergeant Jeff Jacobs found several books of blank checks in Clements’ vehicle, and he determined through investigation that Clements passed another stolen check with a forged signature the day before. Clements was sentenced to a three year term of community control supervision. The terms of her supervision include a 30 day jail sentence and a mandatory drug and alcohol assessment, treatment and monitoring. Clements was also ordered to pay $735.00 in restitution to the crime victim. Thatcher said Clements will serve an 11 month prison sentence, if she violates any supervision rules.
Earl E. Harsh, 21, and Crystal M. McCoy, 19, were convicted of forgery and complicity in the commission of forgery for passing two counterfeit checks at a Mount Vernon store, on September 6, 2009. Harsh and McCoy live at the same address, in Mount Gilead. They were sentenced to three year terms of community control supervision including 60 day jail sentences. Thatcher said they were also ordered to pay over $900.00 in restitution to the crime victim. Both will serve an 11 month prison sentence, if they violate any supervision rules. Detective Sergeant Jacobs investigated the cases.
