Felony Prosecution

The primary responsibility of the Knox County Prosecutor is to bring to justice those criminals who victimize the citizens of Knox County by committing felony crimes such as murder, rape, robbery, or burglary. It is the County Prosecutor’s duty, when in possession of sufficient evidence to warrant the belief that a person is guilty and can be convicted of a felony, to prosecute the appropriate criminal proceedings on behalf of the people of Knox County.

Before a felony case can be effectively prosecuted, it must first be investigated by a governmental agency, bureau, office or department having jurisdiction over the alleged crime or crimes.

The Prosecutor's Office works most often with the following investigative authorities:

Knox County Sheriff’s Office

740-397-3333

Mount Vernon Police Department

740-397-2222

Fredericktown Police Department

740-397-3333

Danville Police Department

740-397-3333

Knox County Children Services

740-392-KIDS

Ohio State Highway Patrol

We work closely with other members of the Knox County law enforcement community with the goal of removing dangerous individuals from our streets.

After a case is accepted for felony prosecution, any victim or witness having questions about, or information concerning, the case is encouraged to contact my Victim Assistance Office at: 740-397-3404

Crimes that are not felonies are called misdemeanors. The law provides a lesser punishment for misdemeanors than for felonies. Examples of misdemeanors are petty theft, driving under suspension and disorderly conduct. The Mount Vernon City Law Director prosecutes misdemeanors committed by adults in Knox County.

The City Law Director’s telephone number is: 740-393-9562

Sometimes it is not clear whether a crime is a felony or a misdemeanor. Any interested person having questions about whether a crime is a felony or a misdemeanor should not hesitate to contact the Prosecutor’s Office.
