If you feel you are indigent and would qualify for the services of the Knox County Public Defender, bring the following information to 110 East High Street, which is located directly across the street from the Knox County Courthouse, adjacent to the Memorial Building:
YOU MUST MAKE APPLICATION FOR REPRESENTATION BY THE PUBLIC DEFENDER AT LEAST 10 DAYS BEFORE A COURT TRIAL OR JURY TRIAL, 48 HOURS PRIOR TO A PRETRIAL OR PRELIMINARY HEARING AND 24 HOURS PRIOR TO AN ARRAIGNMENT.
1. COPY OF ALL CHARGES/COMPLAINTS AGAINST YOU
2. Dates of trial or any hearing scheduled for you
3. Be able to provide proof of household and individual income upon request
A Twenty-five Dollar ($25.00) application fee is payable within seven (7) days of acceptance of an application for representation, payable at the Clerk of Court’s office of the Court wherein you are to appear. The fee cannot be waived.
If you are physically handicapped and are unable to climb stairs, please notify the bailiff or call the Public Defender’s Office to make arrangements for application.
If you are incarcerated, inform the jailer that you wish to speak with the Public Defender’s Office.
