CCW Procedures

Scheduling a Background Check

You must schedule the background check prior to your arrival at the Knox County Sheriff’s Office. To schedule an appointment:
Appointments are scheduled in 15 minute intervals and are available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays between 9:00 A.M. and 11:30 A.M. and from 1:00 P.M. to 3:30 P.M. Upon arriving at the Sheriff’s Office, your completed application must be turned over to the representative taking your fingerprints. At that time you will be required to pay the non-refundable application fee as follows:

CCW License Application

To apply for a license to carry a concealed handgun, pick up a Concealed Carry License and Renewal Application. These are available online at the Ohio Attorney General’s website and the Knox County Sheriff’s Office on weekdays from 8:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M.

New License

First Time Renewal with Knox County

Requirements are the same as those listed above for a new license. For a first renewal, proof of competency can be a training certificate or CCW license from another county. You will also need:

License Fees

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office accepts checks or money orders for payment of fees. We do not accept cash or any credit or debit cards. (Fees are waived if the applicant is a retired law enforcement officer or an active or retired member of the armed forces.)

Application Approval

Once your application has been submitted and fingerprinting completed, DO NOT contact the Sheriff’s Office to check on your application’s status. The Sheriff has forty-five business days to issue a concealed handgun license. You will be contacted within that period of forty-five days to be informed of the acceptance or denial of your application.

If the Sheriff denies you the issuance of a license, you will be informed as to why the application was denied in writing.
If the Sheriff approves the application, the Sheriff’s Office will be in contact to inform you that the license is available for pick up.

Concealed handgun licenses may be picked up at the Sheriff’s Office any time on Monday through Friday from 8:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M.

The procedure for renewing a license is the same as for the original license, with the exception being that no photo is needed. Please include a copy of your training certificate with the renewal application if the Knox County Sheriff’s Office did not issue the original license.
