Youth and Young Adults

At OhioMeansJobs Knox County, job seekers/workers ages 16-24 are considered youth and/or young adults. We collaborate with workforce partners and business leaders throughout the community to assist employers in connecting with the youth and young adult workforce.

Benefits and Resources

The Non-Traditional Workforce Committee of the Workforce Development Alliance through collaboration with OhioMeansJobs Knox County has gathered the information below to provide you with information about tapping into this pool of talent.

The Knox County Career Center has specifically skilled students that are looking for work experience opportunities.  KCCC senior students are able to work during the school year, if the job is connected to their lab experience requirements. Click HERE to learn about the KCCC programs. These students take their classes in the mornings and are able to work in the afternoons allowing a possible work schedule of 12:00 pm – 8:00 pm. Students are typically available for extended hour schedules during the summer months and possibly during holiday breaks.

Things to consider:
  • Students may need flexible work hours.
  • Students under age 18 must apply and receive a work permit. Work permits are issued by the student’s high school and the KCCC can help their students obtain this permit.
  • It may be beneficial to have managers with experience working with Generation Z workers.

To learn more and potentially connect with students, contact the KCCC Career Placement & Development Coordinator, Beth Marhefka at 740-397-5820 or [email protected]

The Workforce Development Alliance pioneered a position of High School Career Navigator. The Career Navigator works with high school seniors at the four outlying county high schools (Centerburg, Fredericktown, East Knox, and Danville). The Career Navigator helps students who do not have a plan to enter post-secondary education, enlist in the military, and do not have a solid employment plan indentify a career tract that interests them and connects them to local employment opportunities.

High school students may be able to accept employment during the school year. Possible work hours for these students are 3:00 pm – 8:00 pm. These students may have wider availability during summer months and other school breaks.

Things to consider:

  • Students may need flexible work hours.
  • Students under age 18 must apply and receive a work permit. Work permits are issued by the student’s high school.
  • It may be beneficial to have managers with experience working with Generation Z workers.

For more information about connecting with these high school students, contact Career Navigator, Sean McCutcheon at 740-504-1223 or [email protected]

OhioMeansJobs Knox County operates an on-site General Education Equivalency (GED) tutoring program. This program serves students ages 16-24.

Students enrolled in the OMJ GED program are paired with an experienced Employment Services Specialist (ESS) who works with them and assists with reaching their career goals. ESS staff provide career coaching and access to local job postings. ESS staff help these students identify and eliminate barriers to employment such as transportation.

For more information about connecting with these students, contact the OhioMeansJobs Knox County job center at 740-392-WORK or [email protected] or complete the Contact Us form and an Employment Services Specialist will reach out to you.

OhioMeansJobs Knox County has a paid internship program for youth ages 16-24. Students enrolled in our D.R.E.A.M. youth program may be eligible for placement in paid internships.

OhioMeansJobs Knox County covers 100% of the cost of wages and other employment expenses. We also provide supportive services such as transportation and needed work supplies.
